Pediatric Bioscience is a specialty laboratory testing company developing and commercializing novel products to improve the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
It is currently estimated that 1 in 68 newborns in the US each year will be diagnosed with ASD. More children today will be diagnosed with these disorders than diabetes, Down’s syndrome, and cancer combined. With early behavioral intervention, nearly 50% of children with ASD will be able to be in mainstream classrooms as they enter school. Currently however, the average age of diagnosis is 4.5 years, well past the window of opportunity for effective early intervention. As a result, the average incremental societal cost of ASD is estimated between $1.4M - $2.4M per child, and could be reduced by as much as 66% with earlier diagnosis and intervention.
Pediatric Bioscience has exclusively licensed a set of novel markers for autism from the M.I.N.D. Institute at UC Davis. The M.I.N.D. Institute is an international, multidisciplinary research organization focused on finding effective treatments and cures for autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
Pediatric Bioscience is developing a simple blood test that will provide pediatricians with a powerful tool to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment for children with autism. This test assists in the diagnosis of a particular type of autism, Maternal Antibody Related (MAR) autism which is caused by fetal exposure to circulating maternal antibodies that interfere with the function of key proteins in the brain of the developing baby. This form of autism accounts for about a quarter of autism spectrum.
Not only can this test help children with autism get a faster diagnosis and into treatment earlier, but it can also be used by OB/GYNs as a family planning tool to test women over 35 years of age to help them understand their risk of having a child with this type of autism prior to conception. This test will provide them with valuable information to help them in their decision to proceed with trying to conceive a child.
